Question: Is my first MyForeignLanguageTutor language lesson free?

Answer: Yes, your first foreign language lesson is free. We'll include an assessment of your language level and answer any questions you may have about your upcoming lessons. To sign up for your first trial lesson, please click here: Free Trial Lesson Sign up page.

Question: How do I sign up for my first free trial lesson?

Answer: To sign up for your free trial lesson, go to the Free Trial Lesson Sign up page.

Paying On an As-needed Basis

Question: Can I pay on an as-needed basis?

Answer: Yes! However, if you anticipate scheduling several lessons over a few weeks, you don’t have to re-purchase a lesson through the MyForeignLanguageTutor website every time you want to schedule a lesson. You can purchase multiple lessons at a time or request that we charge your card at end-of-month to cover the lessons for that period. We will, of course, issue a refund/credit for any lessons not actually taken.

Answer: Feel free to pay on an as-needed basis or request that we charge your card at end-of-month to cover the lessons for that period. In order to charge your card for lessons taken during the month, we’ll need you to purchase one lesson via the MyForeignLanguageTutor website so that we have your billing details on file.

How Do I Sign Up?

Question: How do I sign up for language classes? Do I prepay?

Answer: Signing up for a class through our website is done in much the same way you purchase an item on the web. Please visit the language product page of your choice (via Shop Languages) and follow the prompts.

Note that your best option may be to purchase a single lesson and then have us charge your account on an as-needed (or monthly) basis as you schedule additional lessons with your tutor.

Forms of Payment

Question: What forms of payment do you accept?

Answer: We accept all major credit cards: Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover and Diners Club. We also offer PayPal as a method of payment for your online orders. Unfortunately, we do not accept cash, checks or money orders.

Cancellation Refund Policy

Question: What is your cancellation refund policy? May I cancel a scheduled class?

Answer: Certainly, you may cancel a scheduled lesson or set of lessons that have not been used and request a refund. Most refunds are refunded within 5 days. Cancellations (and rescheduling) are normally handled through your tutor. Feel free to work with your tutor to cancel or reschedule your lesson as necessary.

Answer: See our rescheduling/cancellation policy below.

Rescheduling/Cancellation Policy

Question: What is your rescheduling/cancellation policy? What is your deadline for rescheduling/cancelling a session?

Answer: Feel free to work with your tutor to reschedule your classes as needed. We normally expect that a student make a good faith effort to reschedule within a reasonable amount of time before a scheduled session starts. Note that a no-show for a scheduled session, or one cancelled less than 24 hours before the lesson day/time, is charged at the regular rate—unless some unforeseen event prevents the student from rescheduling before the scheduled session start time.

Before You Sign Up

Question: Is it possible to discuss my particular language learning needs with MyForeignLanguageTutor before signing up?

Answer: Yes. We will be happy to discuss your goals and target proficiency level. Since your tutor, a native speaker, is in the best position to assess your current level, feel free to take time during your first free lesson to do that assessment and discuss your goals.

Checkout Options

Question: How do "Checkout as Guest" and "Register" differ during checkout?

Answer: When you checkout as a guest, your billing details and language profile survey data are not stored. When you register, your billing details and language profile survey data are stored and available the next time you log in to the system to make a purchase.

MyForeignLanguageTutor Lessons

Question: I’m unfamiliar with the online foreign language tutoring format. How does it work?

Answer: We link up native speakers with foreign language students. It begins when a student signs up. The assigned tutor normally contacts the student within 24 hrs and arranges for a first lesson. (See Your First Lesson in this FAQ for details about your first free lesson.) Subsequent lessons are charged accordingly. Working with the student, the tutor determines the language goals of the student and assesses the student’s language level. After the first two lessons the appropriate textbook is selected. During their sessions, both student and tutor work from the same lesson material. In their person-to-person interactive classes, and as they work through the lesson material, the tutor assists the student with pronunciation, reading, writing and grammar—with emphasis on conversation. Evaluations occur informally as a natural part of regular feedback provided by tutor to student.

Question: What does MyForeignLanguageTutor charge per lesson?

Answer: Lesson cost is dependent on educational background, qualifications and experience of the tutor. Please contact us discuss your language requirements.

Question: How long does a lesson last?

Answer: A lesson lasts one hour (60 minutes). We have found that one hour sesssions, an interval of 60 minutes of person-to-person instruction and interaction, is sufficient for effective language learning, especially when sessions are completed on a regular basis.

Question: I would like to learn a foreign language in the comfort of my home and with the convenience of flexible scheduling that MyForeignLanguageTutor provides. What kind of progress can I expect to make using this method?

Answer: Learning a foreign language by any method depends on your level of motivation, persistence, regularity and frequency of sessions. The MyForeignLanguageTutor method builds on the traditional student/teacher learning approach. Your tutor, a native speaker, will work with you to identify your objectives and establish the ideal curriculum for your particular need. Your tutor will interactively assist you in your progress with proven foreign language learning materials.

Question: Will you assist me in measuring the level of instruction I need?

Answer: Yes, your tutor will assess your language level (Novice, Survivor, Intermediate, Advanced, Fluent) during the first one or two lessons. We have found that our recommended student resources (Barron’s Foreign Language Education Series) satisfies most requirements for Novice, Survivor and some Intermediate levels. Should you be Advanced or Fluent and require advanced tutoring, your tutor will work with you to find the most suitable resources.

Question: How many lessons should I take weekly? What is your recommended pace and frequency of lessons?

Answer: The pace and frequency of lessons is somewhat dependent on the student’s particular learning requirement. Some students may choose to take 1-3 classes per week over a period of a few months to get them started with the new language. In any event, regularity is key to learning. Therefore, two lessons per week should be sufficient to maintain the appropriate level of consistency required to absorb the new language. Some students with ample time and/or a business requirement may choose to meet more often with their tutor.

Question: Will I have to purchase a textbook or some type of language workbook for my lessons?

Answer: Yes. Visit the Student Resources Page to view the recommended course material for your language. Your tutor has the same material, which will allow you both to work through the material together while in session. We’ve found that the recommended resources serve both beginners and intermediate students well, however you may find, depending on your level, a benefit from additional resources such as books dedicated to grammar, verbs, idioms, etc.

Question: I am learning a foreign language for the first time. What is your approach for beginners?

Answer: Following your first free lesson—which is an introduction to the alphabet, the sounds of the language, common expressions and names of common objects—your tutor will guide through the student course material recommended for your language. Barrons Foreign Language Edcuation Series is normally recommended, and is an excellent and affordable choice for the beginner. Go to the Student Resources page to view the recommended course material for your language

Answer: Language basics are mastered by working through the course material. Repetition is an important element of the learning process. Your tutor, a native speaker, will interactively assist you in your progress. Frequency of classes are scheduled according to the level of the student and his/her personal language goals.

Question: How does MyForeignLanguageTutor compare to traditional modes of language instruction?

Answer: MyForeignLanguageTutor is an online language education service. It builds on the best of traditional language instruction, but with the added advantage of a dedicated tutor (person-to-person instruction), while avoiding the cost, time and logistical inconvenience of traveling to another location.

Question: How do I track my lessons and payments?

Answer: Our Student Lesson Payment Tracking System allows you to access your completed lessons and payments and even download a copy of that data to an xls file (excel). Key data provided includes Lesson ID, Lesson Date and Time, Lesson Length, Lesson Amount($), Date of Payment, and Payment Amount. After You Sign Up

Question: I just signed up for my free trial lesson and have received my confirmation email. What should I do next?

Answer: Once your sign up is complete, our office will introduce you to your tutor, who will contact you via email to schedule your first lesson. During the first lesson (as novice or survivor), your tutor will review the sounds of the language, the alphabet, common expressions and names of common objects, answer any questions you may have about your upcoming lessons, and assess your professional and personal language goals. If you don't currently have a Skype account, now is the time to set one up. See How do I set up Skype? for details on setting up a Skype account. If you have questions about your order please contact us at customerservice@myforeignlanguagetutor.com, or call us Monday-Sunday 9am-6pm MT at 1.800.364.7357 (US & Canada), 602.341.3912 (International) or text us at those same numbers.

Question: Will I receive evaluations as I work through the workbook with my tutor?

Answer: Evaluations take the form of informal but constructive and realtime feedback during the course of a lesson. Should you require a formal language evaluation, we can recommend a variety of resources to assist you.

Question: Will homework be assigned as part of my lessons?

Answer: Your Barron’s textbook doubles as a workbook and periodically includes a few homework questions. We recommend you work with your tutor to come up with additional homework exercises as necessary. The amount of homework you take on is, of course, entirely up to you. Your learning is directly proportional to your effort!

Question: Is it helpful to combine a variety of learning approaches, including live lessons (student/tutor with person to person interaction), books, audio recordings and other interactive language software?

Answer: Yes. We recommend leveraging as many approaches as possible when learning a new language. The unique advantage of MyForeignLanguageTutor is that our tutors are not only able to explain the rules of grammar and sentence structure, they will also help you master pronunciation, intonation, and give you insights into the culture and people of the studied language.

Question: What additional language learning activities outside of class do you recommend?

Answer: We recommend a variety of outside-of-class activities to further your language learning:

    • Memorize new words/phrases every day to increase vocabulary
    • Keep a notebook to record new words and phrases and refer to it often
    • Read books (that includes both chosen language and English)
    • Listen to language audio tapes
    • Watch movies if you have local programming in your chosen language
    • Listen to the radio if you have local programming in your chosen language
    • Spend time with native speakers
    • Travel to/spend time in a region/country where your chosen language predominates

Question: How does MyForeignLanguageTutor determine my language level and the level of instruction I need?

Answer: After the first two lessons your tutor should be able to assess your level and match your language interests. Should you need instruction to meet the requirements of standardized tests given by academic institutions and businesses, we will be happy assist you.

MyForeignLanguageTutor Lessons for Children

Question: Can a child learn a new language using the MyForeignLanguageTutor method? What is the lower age limit?

Answer: Yes, children can learn a new language using the MyForeignLanguageTutor method. To some extent, success in the study of a foreign language depends on the level of development of the child and his/her abilities. The child should have generally mastered conversation in the native language before attempting to master conversation in the studied language. At ages 6-7, education takes place by playfully memorizing words and phrases orally. When the child learns to read and write, they are then able to master the alphabet and the rules of phonics, spelling and grammar in the studied language. The key to successful study with your young child is the ability to concentrate and persevere for the length of the lesson period.

Note: Currently we are only able to offer lessons for children learning Russian.

MyForeignLanguageTutor Lessons for Business People

Question: I would like to learn the basics of a foreign language on an accelerated schedule for a planned business trip. Can My Foreign Language Tutor accommodate that particular requirement?

Answer: Yes, we support a variety of individual requirements, such as when a business person plans to travel to a foreign country for the first time and has no previous language experience in that country. Our tutor will work with you to support your professional objectives and establish your preferred level communication skills for a business environment.

Question: Can you assist me in learning business vocabulary associated with my work?

Answer: Should you have particular language requirements associated with your work, your tutor will be happy to work with you to master professional terms and phrases. Note that depending on the complexity and nature of the terms, such as with highly technical terminology, you may want to seek out specialized resources for that purpose.

Working with and Communicating with My Tutor

Question: I just signed up for my first trial lesson and have received my confirmation email. How do I make contact with my tutor for the first time?

Answer: Once your sign up is complete, our office will introduce you to your tutor, who will contact you via email to schedule your first lesson. If for some reason you are not reachable by email, your tutor will contact by phone. During that first contact, your tutor will schedule your first lesson and arrange to contact you via Skype. If you don't currently have a Skype account, now is the time to set one up. Please see our FAQ entry on Skype for details on setting up a Skype account.

Question: How do I communicate with my tutor?

Answer: Skype during lessons, and email in-between lessons. Skype should be the primary way to communicate with your tutor during lessons as Skype-to-Skype calling is free. Skype’s instant messaging feature also enables your tutor to clarify spelling and pronunciation and answer any written questions you may have.

Question: How do I schedule or re-schedule a lesson?

Answer: Work with your tutor to schedule or re-schedule a lesson. Once a lesson is scheduled by your tutor, you and your tutor will receive an email auto-notification that includes the lesson date and time for both student and tutor, time zone information (including any time difference that may exist), and other lesson details.

Question: Who are our tutors?

Answer: Our instructors are native speakers in their foreign language who also bring a high level of English language proficiency to their classes. Our tutors will help you gain skills not entirely achievable through a textbook or classroom by providing person-to-person attention and instruction so important for effective learning. They will gladly explain grammar and sentence structure, help you master pronunciation and intonation, and of course answer your many detailed questions.

Question: How does MyForeignLanguageTutor select a tutor for me?

Answer: Tutor selection is based on availability and location, but also on any preference or request you make (regarding gender preference, for example). Please feel free to let us know any preferences you may have—and if after our initial section you’d like to change tutors, just let us know—you may change a tutor at any time.

Question: May I change my tutor?

Answer: Yes, feel free to contact us anytime should you want to change your tutor.

Question: Do I need special equipment to communicate with my tutor?

Answer: For optimal audio quality you may consider using a headset that includes both earphones and a microphone. Apple laptops and other high quality laptops have excellent speakers and microphones built-in. A portion of your first lesson may be used to resolve any technical issues that may prevent you from communicating with your tutor effectively.

Setting Up and Using Skype

Question: How does Skype work?

Answer: Skype is a free computer-to-computer calling program you can install on your computer. You use Skype to make a "telephone call" to your tutor. Skype-to-Skype calls, or calls made from Skype (on your computer) to Skype (on another computer) anywhere in the world are free of charge.

Answer: Skype can be used to call your tutor much like a normal telephone call, except that the call is made over your computer and is entirely free (when calling another computer with Skype installed). Skype also includes instant messaging that your tutor can use to clarify spelling and pronunciation.
